Lounge PC Info

The Lounge's IT Equipment

We have been donated 5 HP pc's and monitors by SCH for use in The Lounge. We have 4 currently accessable to the general public, with the other one being kept back as a spare. In addition we were kindly donated another pc by a member of the public, which we will be using for a Web Proxy to provide internet acceleration and some content filtering.

The pc's run on Microsofts Windows XP3 Service pack 3. This was preinstalled on the pc's and is fully licensed using the XP Microsoft Authorised Refubisher programme.

We take security very seriously, not just for our benefit, but for yours as well. The pc's employ a special mode called Windows Steady State. This is an additional piece of free software made by Microsoft to provide a higher level of protection to the operating system, widely used in places where public access is granted, such as libaries and schools. This means that no matter what changes are made during a session, they are completly removed upon a reboot. This protects the pc's from malware attacks and / or accidental or deliberate corruptions or changes to the operating system or installed programmes.

Anti-virus protection is performed by Microsoft Security Essentials and is totally free to licensed versions of Microsoft Windows.

Web content filtering is provided by K9 Protection. A FREE home version is available for those that which to use it for their own personal use.

Additional Software

Not are we only aiming to provide free internet access, but we are also wanting you to be able to use the computers in ways not normally availble to publicly accessable systems. Below is a list of software installed on the pc's that you are free to use.
All the software is free, not just to use in The Lounge, but wherever you want! Many of the wirters of the software rely on donations, in a similar manner to The Lounge, some are run by large groups of enthusisasts but others are created and maintained by  multinational companies. The software is often referred to as Open Source or Freeware, dependant on how it is licensed for use.
We aim to keep adding to the list  as time goes on. If you have any suggestions for software, either by specific name, or by genre type, then get in touch with the WebAdmin in the contact links.

Many of these can be added in a single go by an incrediable bit of software from this download site.
